Retrofitting a Conveyor Into an Existing Treatment Plant: Working With the Space You Have

Greenfield plants get to design material handling first and build around it. Everyone else retrofits — into buildings full of piping, walkways, electrical runs, and equipment that isn’t moving. Retrofit conveyor projects succeed or fail on how honestly the design confronts the existing space.

Start With What Can’t Move

Before any conveyor gets specified, document the immovables: structural columns, headroom restrictions, existing process equipment, code-required egress paths, and crane or hoist access that maintenance depends on. A conveyor that blocks the route for pulling a centrifuge rotor hasn’t solved a problem; it’s created one on a delay.

Straight Lines Are a Luxury

Conventional conveyors want straight runs, and every direction change traditionally means a transfer point — another drive, another spill zone, another maintenance item. In a crowded plant, a three-transfer layout is common, and transfer points are where housekeeping problems live.

A path-following system changes that math. The Pathwinder conveyor turns, climbs, and descends as one continuous conveyor — a single belt, a single drive — following a route through the building rather than demanding the building accommodate straight lines. For retrofits, that frequently means one machine replacing what would otherwise be three conveyors and two transfer towers.

Structural Load and Support

Existing structures weren’t necessarily designed for new point loads. Serpentine and modular systems distribute support loads along the route and can often hang from existing steel with modest reinforcement. Get structural review early — support steel drives more retrofit cost variance than the conveyor itself.

Keeping the Plant Running During Installation

  • Sequence installation around the process: most cake and screenings systems can be installed in sections during normal operation, with the changeover done in a planned short outage
  • Prefabrication matters: systems that arrive in large, shop-assembled sections minimize field welding and installation days — Serpentix fabrication is done in-house, so sections arrive ready to set
  • Plan the temporary handling path for the outage window before committing to a schedule
